Tutoring Program – UK National Curriculum:
At Tutoring Club, we use adaptive learning which is personalized to every pupil’s academic needs. All our tutoring programs are tailored to the pupil’s level regardless of the curriculum or subject they are learning. This means that we start to teach pupils at the level they are comfortable with and then we start to fill learning gaps and build the required skills.
Our proprietary program of study is aligned to the leading UK national curriculum to ensure successful outcomes for all our pupils.
Language and literacy:
Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all other subjects. Our tutoring program in English focusses on teaching pupils reading comprehension skills, vocabulary development, in addition to writing skills which include grammar, punctuation, composition and other key enrichment skills.
Reading Comprehension:
Tutoring club believes that reading is the common thread for all school success. This is why our English reading tutoring program is focused on building reading fluently, understanding fiction and non-fiction prose. Our methods for teaching comprehension skills extend to areas such as drawing conclusion, making inferences, getting the min idea and many other required comprehension skills which are required for academic success.
Vocabulary Development:
Pupils’ command of vocabulary is key to their learning and progress across across all subjects. Our personalized tutoring therefore develops vocabulary actively, building systematically on pupils’ current knowledge. We work to increase pupils’ store of words in general while simultaneously making links between known and new vocabulary and discuss the shades of meaning in similar words. In this way, pupils expand the vocabulary choices that are available to them when they write.
In addition, it is vital for pupils’ comprehension that they understand the meanings of words they meet in their reading across all subjects, so older pupils are taught the meaning of instruction verbs that they may meet in examination questions. We believe that it is particularly important to induct pupils into the language which defines each subject in its own right, such as accurate mathematical and scientific language.
English Writing
The English writing program from Tutoring Club teaches students how to plan, revise and evaluate their writing. These aspects of writing have been incorporated into our programmes of study for composition. Teaching composition at Tutoring Club involves forming, articulating and communicating ideas, and then organising them coherently for a reader. This requires clarity, awareness of the audience, purpose and context, and an increasingly wide knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. Writing also depends on fluent, legible and, eventually, speedy handwriting.
Our writing program teaches pupils to control their speaking and writing consciously and to use Standard English. They are taught to use the elements of spelling, grammar, punctuation and language effectively in order to improve their writing style and techniques.
Numeracy and mathematics
At Tutoring Club, we believe that Confidence in numeracy and other mathematical skills is a precondition of academic success in all subjects.
Our Pupils are taught to apply arithmetic fluently to problems, understand and use measures, make estimates and sense check their work. They are taught to apply their geometric and algebraic understanding and relate their understanding of probability to the notions of risk and uncertainty. They are also taught to understand the cycle of collecting, presenting and analysing data and how to apply their mathematics to both routine and non-routine problems, including breaking down more complex problems into a series of simpler steps.
